Statement of intent
I am aiming to produce a portfolio of my work demonstrating my ideas and the development of the work to show it has come on a journey and that is flows and reflects the theme I have chose ‘textures’. At the end of my exam prep time I will take my best photos and use the techniques I have learnt in photoshop to edit them and to them produce all of my final outcomes together so that each outcome can be easily viewed and then, I will take my best photos from my natural and man made photos and print them off to make a book showing the different impacts and changes in textures from natural to mad made and present them to reflect each other and also to show environmental issues with them.
For my research I will start by looking around the area of textures to see if I can find any ideas of what I might look into and will take a closer look into natural textures where I will look at two photographers that also follow this line of work...These photographers look into natural textures like wood grain, stone and nature, I am looking to also take inspiration from these to take ideas and use it in my work because I like how it looks and I think I can take a lot from this and produce a high level of work.
When I chose this theme, my initial thoughts were of looking close into things but when I researched I realised that I could do so much more and look into it further with different sections which is why I have gone for natural textures then I decided a good idea would be to create a book showing the different environmental issues and the difference in textures between natural and man made textures and present them in a book at the end reflecting each of the two photos.
To show progression I will be making my ideas first then gathering photos and uploading them and then to take the images and edit them with screenshots to show how I made them. I hope to go out and take photos of different natural textures so it links into my theme of work.
I have six weeks to produce my final portfolio, I am to complete the initial research within the first few weeks so I can get onto taking pictures and which will give me time to make my portfolio look neat and tidy so it’s not messed up. I will then have an 8 hour exam where I will edit and post my pictures ready for final outcomes and at the end when I am in my exam I will produce my book reflecting different textures of natural vs man made photos and to present and show the environmental issues.

Artist Research:Marc Anderson
The photo I am researching is a natural texture shot from Marc Anderson and in the photo its a close up shot of a tree with plants in it, showing wood grain in a very detailed way. It has many different shapes and details because the camera is zoomed in so every bit of details can be shown, it shows the wood grain and all the lines and twirls within the trees. The picture looks like a new images but the object taken (the tree) looks like and old tree which shows the tree as it degrades and has moss on it which contrasts with the brown colour. The colour of the tree is different shades of brown in all of the grain and then the moss and plants contrasting with being a bright colour in a darker shade. The images comes from a tree and is wood grain which was a seed and grown overtime. It is a close up image of a tree to show the wood grain and all the shapes in detail. The focus point is a close up image of a natural texture.
The connection of this is that it links in with my aim which I am focusing on because the theme of this image is natural textures which is the exact theme I am going to be using for my project because I like the pictures I can get with it and also I think I can take it on a journey. It can link to my work because they are taking images which I am going to take inspiration from and use it in my work and take similar photos. I don't think there is a message behind it but I think it is trying to show the true details in the wood. This shows a hard texture which I could use in my work to show a contrast with another texture which is soft and I can show a contrast by blending them together.
In this image I think the strengths are that the detail is very strong and makes it so you can see detail you wouldn't usually see with the human eye. In this images there is nothing I don't like because it shows a colour contrast and also the shapes and twirls in wood grain and the very strong detail. I can use this image to inspire me to show natural vs man made textures and present it in a different way. The meaning I think is to show the real detail that a person wouldn't normally see with the naked eye.

Artist Research:Aaron Siskind
The photo I am looking at is hard metal looking texture shot from a really good photographer named Aaron Siskind, and in the photo it looks like a picture of a metal wall or object that has been zoomed in on to see the detail of all the shapes that have decayed away which makes new shapes within the image. The picture might be old because it is in black and white and because the object that has been taken looks old and corroded and broken down over time. The image has been put into black and white to give it an older look or the photo was taken a long time ago so they might not have had coloured photos. I can't really tell where this is because it is a close up image with no background, but if was to guess I would say an old factory or warehouse. The image is made from metal which has been left over time so now it is corroded and broken down after years to make holes, which has made it look old and rusty. It might be a close up picture of a structure but I can't see what in or around the picture and there are no people it is just a close up photo of an object or building that is old and abandoned. I think it just looks like a section of a building that has been zoomed in on to see the texture in detail. The focus point of the image is the close up on detail in texture of the a metal object or part of a building. When looking at this image your eyes are drawn to the detail of the texture in the image.
The theme of this is textures and this is relevant because I am focusing on difference between natural and man made and the environmental impacts of the two and this shows it in a building that looks man made, it can link to my work because these are the type of images I will be taking and then presenting in a book to reflect differences between them. In the image I don't really think there is a message but it could show the in detail texture that can't be seen with the human eye.
I think the image was put into black and white for two reasons which is to make it look old or the image was taken a long time ago when they didn't have colour in pictures , but I wouldn't do this as I have done this previously and think I need to devlop my work and push further to get a better grade.
In the image I like the fact that it is close up detail because you wouldn't be able to see this with a human eye and so it makes it look good and that they have taken the photo at the point they have to show that it is old and has been corroded away. In the image I don't like the black and white because it would be nice to see all the colours and to see if it is rusted and to show the different colours in the object that has been zoomed in on and it would look good to see all the different colours. I can use this to inspire me because I want to do close up pictures and present them as a book of natural vs man made colours. The main reason I think he took this image was because he wanted to show the detail in texture that you wouldn't normally see.
Aaron Siskind is an american photographer and he is considered one of the greatest artist in photography and was involved in looking at a part of abstract expressionist movement. He worked as a social documentary photographer, a survey of life in Harlem. Siskind also identified with the ideas and styles. In these later photographs he continued to emphasize the modernist concern with the flatness of the picture plane, but intensified his approach to picture close-up framing, as well as emphasis on texture, line, and visual rhymes, creating abstract images of the real world.

My first photo shoot plan
Test shoot:Textures
Photography Workshop photos:Close up texture
These images were taken at a half term workshop with a really good photographer named Justin who helped me get a good set of images which were of high quality which I think can really boost my grade. To which I took images of a variety of close up images.
My next plan:
My next steps are to not do Photoshop but is to do the photos i'm thinking off in real life by putting hard and soft together and taken photos with it. I am going to be gathering some fruits and other soft materials and adding and mixing hard textures with them to show a contrast between the two textures so an example of my shoot will be to get a fruit like strawberries or a cauliflower and stick needles and nails into them to show the hard nail texture with the soft fruit.
Hard and soft textures
Pepper and nails
My final exam idea:
In my exam time I will be printing out the collage of my images that I have manipulated and adding to my book in different ways by cutting them differently into. The meaning of my images will be to show the contrast between soft and hard textures.
I am going to be looking at handmade artist books which will show and reflect natural vs man made textures from an opposite view and use some images that I will be taking inspiration from to help me produce my final product of work. I want to edit some photos over each other to show a contrast of my aim and produce this book to show different pieces that contrast each other. I will start the book with a hard or soft back and will take inspiration from this image to print my developed images and glue them down to the corresponding contrasts I want to make in my final project. I may make designs in the pages to fit my photos into to make it different and not the same as a regular book and will make it look similar to the picture. I think this will inspire me to help boost my grade and will become a final project of my aim to produce the contrast in texture for natural vs man made.
In my opinion I like this idea a lot because I will use this as inspiration to make my final piece in my exam. I think it can really show and display my work in a good way and creative way and the book will show all the work that has been documented on my portfolio. This connects well with my work cause the book I will be making will show a contrast between hard and soft textures.
The image shows a hand crafted book with a creative display which is similar to what I am going to be doing, I will be making the book from scratch then adding my own images to the book to display my work.
My mock of up of my book
In these images I have cut out some pictures of my manipulations which I will be adding to my final outcome of my texture book. I will be using other images aswell which I have created like these with other images and will be cut out and stuck down.
Gallery manipulations:
Manipulations
I am going to be manipulating my photos by layering and blending soft and hard textures over each other and experimenting with different ways to see what looks the best, to then apply my images to make a book that will show all the contrast I will be making between soft and hard textures.
29th, April 2019 from this point I will not touch preparation work. The only work from this date will be work from my exam.

Evaluation:
For this project I have looked at lots of photographers and ideas for inspiration leading up to my final product, all the people and ideas I have looked at, link in very well with my theme of textures which I have been driving and pushing to achieve the highest grade I can. I have explored these to gather an idea of the type of images I will be needing and how I can manipulate them using Photoshop which I have a learnt a lot from over the duration of the project. I looked at Marc Anderson to show the link of what type of images I will be taking and using towards the end of my project. I experimented using different objects to try and capture texture and found the type I was going for which is hard vs soft textures and the contrast between them. At the start I made a mood board of different hard and soft textures I could use as inspiration in my final project.
For my final project I have made more final outcomes for my pages so I have a variety of collages to use in the exam when in the making of my book, I have then experimented by overlapping them to show off more of my Photoshop work, and have made different pages as an example in Photoshop to help me picture my final book. Then I have taken all the time I have had to gather images and plan out what I will do in my exam time and I have made a book which is a hand crafted book with different images and styles of displaying the contrast of hard and soft textures. I have taken images of my own put them together in a collage changing some to black and white which I have then printed out to use in my final book, I made a plan book so I know what I am working with in the exam and have shown it in my process. I have practiced many ways to see which one will be the most successful and help me with my final piece. I feel my final piece will reflect all the work I have shown throughout the project and will come together to make my final book and get me the grade I want at the end of my time.
